Willmenia "Willie" H. Courtney

Willmenia “Willie” H. Courtney was born February 11, 1931, in Haigler, Nebraska, to Arthur Clifford and Juanita Evelyn (Sims) Olson. She passed away in Greeley, Colorado, on September 19, 2016, at the age of 85.
Willie grew up on the family homestead with her parents and brother, Clifford, ten miles north of Haigler, Nebraska. She graduated from Wray High School in 1948. Working as an operator at the phone company after high school she met James “Jim” Courtney of Wray, and they were married on July 25, 1953, in Wray at the Methodist Church. They lived in California while Jim served in the Navy. After the Navy, they moved to Denver where she stayed very busy raising four boys. In 1990, they retired and moved to Laird, Colorado.
She found great satisfaction working in her large vegetable garden, sharing with neighbors and friends, and having plenty of vegetables to can or freeze. Cooking and baking were some of her passions and she was known for her pies. She was quite a fisherwoman, usually out fishing Jim. As an avid Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies fan, she never missed watching one of their games.
Willie was a member of the Wray Methodist Church, the Sage Hens, and the ladies auxiliary of the VFW and American Legion.
Willie is survived by Jim, her husband of sixty three years, children Bruce Courtney of Laird; James Courtney and his wife Janet of Golden, Colorado; Robert Courtney and his wife Barbara of Denver; grandsons Ben Courtney and Sam Courtney and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Juanita Olson, her brother Clifford Olson, and son William Courtney.
Visitation was held Monday, September 26, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home in Wray, Colorado.
Funeral services were held at the Wray United Methodist Church in Wray, Colorado, Tuesday, September 27, 2016, 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Ben Wentworth officiating. Interment will be held in the Grandview Cemetery in Wray, Colorado.
