William Dale Strangways, son of George and Hazel (Gable) Strangways, was born on June 29, 1932, near Beecher Island in the partially sod ranch home on the original Strangways homestead. He passed away at the Wray Community Hospital on February 20, 2016.
Bill attended grade school in the one-room school at Beecher Island. In 1945, at the age of 12, Bill was given a second set of parents and became the foster son of George “Shorty” and Hollis Oberg. He chose to attend Armel High School and graduated with a class of six in 1950. During his time at the store, he met Darlene Oberg. They were married on November 15, 1953, at the First English Lutheran Church in Sterling, Colorado. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage. To this union two children were born; Trudi Dale in 1957 and Bradley Dean in 1958.
Following the wedding, Bill served 2 years in the United States Army, stationed at Ft. Ord, California and at Ft. Meade, Maryland. Upon his return, he resumed farming and they moved to their home south of Beecher Island. In 1967, they moved to the ranch where his grandfather had homesteaded. Bill was active in the local community, where he attended the Beecher Island Sunday School and served as a board member of the Beecher Island Memorial Association.
After many decades committed to farming and ranching, he retired. They remained on the farm until 2001, when they moved to Wray. In 2002 Bill was baptized and confirmed into the Calvary Lutheran Church where he served on the board of trustees for several years. During his retirement, he had a passion for assembling and sharing with others his extensive collection and display of model tractors and machinery. They took numerous trips to see other parts of the country and to visit family and friends. Even though he enjoyed the trips, his favorite place to be was home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Strangways and Hazel Strangways Harrison and foster-parents, George Oberg and Hollis Oberg Smith; sisters, Mildred Colvin and Lois Carol Strangways, and brother, Richard Strangways.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene; children Trudi Wieser and husband, Roger, and Brad Strangways and wife, Katy; granddaughter, Katie Wieser; sister, Darlene Lewis and husband, Albert; brother Malcom Strangways and wife, Lorina; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services were held on February 24, 2016, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Wray, Colorado, officiated by Pastor Timothy Davis. Burial was held at Grandview Cemetery in Wray. Arrangements were made by Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Calvary Lutheran Church for Radio Ministries and the Wray Volunteer Fire Department.
