Stanley “Neil” Matney, born on September 10, 1937, in St. Francis, Kansas, to Stanley and Nellie (Baxter) Matney, passed away peacefully at his home on February 8, 2025, in Wray, Colorado, surrounded by many loved ones. On October 19, 1958, Neil married the love of his life, JoAnn (Weickum). They settled in Fort Collins, where they raised their children, Mark and Michelle.
Neil had a diverse career, engaging in various occupations, including raising and training Arabian horses, preaching, and construction, but he spent the majority of his life ranching. When not working, he cherished time with his horses, piloted, and enjoyed time with his family. In 2000, Neil and JoAnn relocated to Lusk, Wyoming, where he continued his ranching career. In 2017, they retired to Wray, Colorado, where Neil found joy in watching the weekly sales at the local sale barn and spending quality time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Neil was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Nellie Matney; his son, Larry Joe; and his siblings, Dan (Gladys) Matney and JoRae (Virgil) Fritchel. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn; his children, Mark (Stacy) Matney and Michelle (David) Lee; Brother Bill (Karen) Matney; his grandchildren, Heather Matney, Justin (Brenna) Matney, Cody Matney, Madison Matney, Lexi Matney, Luke Matney, Levi (Tamara) Houston, Dusty (Dani) Houston, and Brandi (Jerrett) Ritchey; as well as 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
