Ruth Beechley Engel was born June 30, 1925 in a farmhouse eight miles north of Eckley, Colorado to Alba ?Abb? David and Roselia (Lamb) Beechley, where she lived until the age of six years when the family moved to the old homestead northwest of Idalia, two miles north of the Poenisch (Mullin) Ranch. She had three brothers and four sisters. She passed away on October 14, 2013 in Wray, Colorado.
From her first marriage to Fred Engel, she had three children, Annette, Janice, and Darlene. This marriage dissolved and on March 13, 1948 Ruth married the love of her life, Edward A.H. Engel, and a fourth daughter, Kathy was born. Ruth was a farm wife and homemaker all her life; she and Ed raised the four young girls and spent almost 50 years of life on a farm west of Idalia, Colorado. She and Ed raised wheat, cows and pigs, and Ruth did her fair share of ?man?s work? right alongside Ed. In her later years she became famous in Idalia for custom Angel food cakes, often making several in a day, and never with a mixer. Amongst her family and friends she was famous for her bread, cinnamon rolls, cookies, and noodles, all of them known by heart and mixed by hand. Summer wheat harvest was a time of big family reunions, hard work, card-playing, story-telling and feasting. Family and neighbors were important to her. Nobody left her house a stranger, and nobody left hungry. In 2003 she moved into Wray so that she could be closer to family. She took pride in her gardening, quilting and baking and continued her embroidery work up until the last day of her life.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Ed Engel; first husband, Fred Engel; daughter Janice, son-in-law, Joe Weir; son-in-law, Dick Toner; and all her siblings.
