Ralph was born in Indianpolis, Indiana, in 1918 the oldest son of Ralph and Fern Young. In 1928, the family moved to Philadelphia, PA. Here Ralph attended school and worked for his father in the auto rental business. In 1941, he enlisted in the Army Corps and was stationed in Denver at Lowry Field. While Ralph was stationed there he met and fell in love with Maxine Brown, who was raised on a farm south of Wray. They married a year later in Denver. Their first son, Ronald was born in 1943, Ralph was still in the Army Corps. When World War II was over they moved to Philadelphia where Ralph worked for different companies as fleet maintenance supervisor or as a truck driver. In 1947, their second son, Larry was born. In 1950, they moved to the suburbs of Philadelphia where they lived for 24 years. Maxine and Ralph were both active in their church and community. Ralph especially enjoyed working with the Boy Scouts. After their sons were married and left home, Maxine and Ralph decided to move to Wray. Ralph worked for Montgomery Ward as a truck driver. They were both active in the Presbyterian Church and the American Legion. They loved to travel both in the United States and abroad. Just a month ago Ralph was hoping he would be able to go on one more cruise. He had two other passions, automobile racing and reading, which gave him endless hours of entertainment.
Ralph is preceded in death by his wife, Maxine and his brother, Warren. He is survived by his son, Ronald, and his wife, Shaula and their three sons, Paul, Andy and Bobby and his four great-grandchildren, Shawn, Violet, Ava and Juliette, and his son, Larry & wife, Sue and their two sons, Christopher and Marc.
Memorial services were held at the Spellman-Schmidt Funeral Home in Wray, Colorado on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Norman Stott officiating. Inurnment was in the Grandview Cemetery in Wray, Colorado. Memorials may be made to the “Friends of Wray Public Library, 301 W. 7th Street, Wray, Colorado 80758. Spellman-Schmidt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
