Peggy Marie (Garton) Witte was born September 4, 1934, to Paul M. and Mary E. Garton. Growing up in rural Yuma County she learned early the value of hard work and responsibility. Peg liked nothing better than to be outside working with her dad on the farm. In a family with eight children there was never a lack of things to do. She carried these values all through her life and met each day with a smile and eagerness toward her tasks.
Peg graduated from Wray High School in 1952. She married Harley Witte the next year in 1953 and became a confirmed member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Wray. The Church was an important part of their lives, and they enjoyed their church families everywhere they lived over the years, finally returning to Wray in their retirement. Peg loved volunteering for many and various jobs in the Church. She was a member of Altar Guild, Miriam Guild and each summer headed up the snack department for Vacation Bible School. Peg enjoyed the quilting sessions and many other activities. Peg was active at Manna Pantry as well. The work always seemed more fun when Peg was there.
Peg liked researching and collecting information about her family and thoroughly enjoyed getting all her siblings and their families together for reunion dinners. There were lots of nieces and nephews. Those were special times. Peg was thrilled when grandchildren and great grandchildren began arriving. She said over and over again that she just wanted to sit and hold the babies. And the babies loved it as well as their overworked parents! What a blessing!
Two children were born to Peg and Harley, Jeanie, and Bob. Toward the end of Harley's career with Mountain Bell, they lived in Fort Collins and the kids finished high school there. Peg worked at Poudre R 1 for many years in various positions. Peg loved working with the kids and helping them with a number of issues. When Harley and Peg both retired, they moved back to their hometown of Wray.
