Eva ‘Maxine’ (Lewis) Wells was born December 11, 1923 in Morehead, Kansas to James Carl and Beulah Nolene (Blake) Lewis. Maxine passed away at Hillcrest Care on October 29, 2011 after a lengthy illness.Maxine was the eldest of four children (3 girls and 1 boy) Jean Bernard (deceased), Bernice Lyons (deceased) and Jim (Ferne) Lewis of Chloride, AZ.In the 1930’s, Maxine’s family moved to California. While she lived in California, she met her husband Bob Wells, who was in the Army Air Corp. He was stationed in Tucson. Ariz. He was on leave in California when he met Maxine. After a whirl-wind courtship of six weeks, they were married in Las Vegas on January 20, 1942. Upon discharge from the service, Bob and Maxine moved back to the Wells homestead southeast of Wray.Two sons were born to Maxine and Bob. Larry Dean (deceased) and Lewis ‘Wayne’.Bob passed away March, 1994.Maxine was a typical farmers wife doing it all, from gathering eggs, washing and candling them to sell; bottle feeding dairy calves, planting a large garden to supply fresh food for the summer and canning the food for the winter. She was an excellent seamstress and cook. She cooked for the wheat harvest crews, as well as for her family and friends.Maxine also worked outside her home at the Wray her home at the WrayCourthouse in the Assessor’s office, the Wray Clinic; the sale barn onFriday’s and later at Brophy’s Electric retiring in 1986.Beside her work life, Maxine volunteered for many different organizations.The 1St Christian Church, Legion Auxiliary, 4-H, Sage Hens, helping withCommunity Blood Draws and of course, cooking for community pot luckdinners.And, she enjoyed most of all, having her two grandkids, when they wouldcome visiting to the farm or visiting them in Eagle and later in GrandJunction, CO.Maxine leaves her son Wayne and her daughter-in-law Brandy (Michele)and granddaughter, Crystal (Ryan) Morrissette all of Grand Junction, CO and a grandson, Shaler Wells of Carrizozo, New Mexico. Her brother Jim Lewis and his wife Feme of Chloride AZ, plus numerous nieces and nephews.Cremation has taken place. Services were held at Spellman-Schmidt Mortuary on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 11 am.Memorial donations maybe given to the First Christian Church and Hillcrest Care and Hospice. Spellman-Schmidt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
