Leo Francis Sprague was born January 7, 1925 to Arthur Ray and Barbara Marie (Vogl) Sprague in Ft. Lupton, Colorado. Leo attended and graduated from Longmont High School where he played football and many other sports.
Leo enlisted in the Marine Corps June 15, 1944. After boot camp he was stationed overseas on the Russell Islands, Guadalcanal, Uithi, Caroline Islands and Okinawa. He participated in operations against enemy forces in Okinawa and was shot. Leo received a Purple Heart for his wounds received in action.
Leo returned home and married his high school sweetheart Laurene Burback August 11, 1946. To this union was born Audrey Laurene, Larry Roy, Leo Arthur and Vickie Jane Sprague.
Leo worked construction building mountain roads with Lowdermilk Construction, where he could operate all heavy equipment. Soon his love of farming took over and he began farming with his dad and brother in Longmont, CO. Leo and Laurene purchased their first farm in Platteville, CO where they raised corn and hay and milked 75 head of cattle. They sold their dairy farm and in 1973 moved to Wray with their 2 sons Larry and Lee. They continued to live on their farm until November of 2015.
Leo passed away peacefully at Hillcrest Care Center in Wray February 13, 2016.
Leo is survived by his wife Laurene of 69 years, Daughter Audrey (Bink) Kitzman of Platteville, son Leo A (Linda) Sprague of Wray, Daughter in-Law Kerry Sprague of Wray. Leo was blessed with 7 Grandchildren and 19 Great-Grandchildren, all were very near and dear to his heart. Leo is Survived by 2 sisters Mary and Thelma and 2 Brothers Neil and Ned.
Leo was preceded in death by infant daughter Vickie Jane, and son Larry Roy.
Brothers, Paul, Ralph, Joe, William, Johnny and sister Alice.
A Receiving of Family & Friends was held on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at the Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home in Wray, Colorado from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Funeral service was held Wednesday February 17th at 9:00 A.M. at the Schmidt Jones Funeral Home in Wray, Colorado with Graveside services and burial at Foothills Gardens of Memory in Longmont, Colorado with Pastor Randy Mayer officiating.
Donations can be made in Leo’s name to Wauneta Fire Hall and Hillcrest Care Center.
