Lela Elaine Funk, daughter of Claude L. and Jessie Faye Funk, was born on December 27, 1918 in Nolan, New Mexico. Her family moved to Wray when Lela was 2. She was a Wray resident until her earthly life ended on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at age of 93.
Lela graduated from Wray High School in 1936. She worked for a time as a secretary for her future husband, John Russell (Pete) Edmunds. They were married on May 26, 1940 and their daughter, Kathy was born in 1946. Lela was widowed in 1951 when Pete succumbed to complications fro surgery.
Lela worked at the Wray Clinic as a receptionist then met and married Leo McCoy on September 1, 1954. Their son, Patrick was born in 1956. Leo and Lela owned and operated the Star Liquor Store in Wray for 40 Years. lela also worked as a bookkeeper for Coad’s Florist and later in retail sales at Ken Lane Clothing where her skills as a seamstress also allowed her to provide alterations. Lela and Leo belonged to a bridge club and Lela was an active member of Sorosis for many years.. The couple enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and traveling with friends throughout their 52 year marriage until Leo passed away on April 23, 2006. Lela and her daughter, Kathy, were best friends and were blessed to be able to spend the last years of her life together.
Lela was active in volunteer work delivering Meals on Wheels, enjoyed lunch with friends at Meet and Eat at the Wray Senior Community Center, and exercised three times a week at the Wray Hospital Adult Fitness program for many years. Lela was an avid reader throughout her life and was an avid reader throughout her life and was a regular patron at the library. Lela was well known for her warmth, friendship, quick smile, and caring nature…she was a truly kind and gentle soul.
Lela was preceded in death by her infant sister, Elsie Vesta, her parents, brother, Claude Funk and his wife, Mary, sister, Francis McKee and her husband, Ed, sister, Mary Faye Twiss, sister, Doris Lewton and her husband, Verle, and husbands, “Pete” Edmunds and Leo McCoy.
She survived by her daughter, Kathy Edmunds of Wray, son Pat McCoy of Houston, Texas, grandson, Chad Goto, his wife, Krista, and two great-grandsons, Aiden and Evan Goto of Goodyear, AZ, and brother-in-law, Howard Twiss of Sterling. She will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews and their families, as well as the many friends she touched throughout the years.
A memorial celebration of her life was held on Wednesday at the Spellman-Schmidt Funeral Home, followed by a private graveside inurnment at Grandview Cemetery in Wray. Memorials may be made to the Wray Senior Community Center or the Hospice of the Plains.
