James Black Lindsey was born November 13th, 1927 in Laurel, Mississippi to G.W. and Pauline Lindsey. He was the seventh of eight children.
Mr Lindsey grew up outside of Laurel on a 40-acre farm where his family raised cotton, vegetables and melons. They also raised pigs and numerous farm animals. James and his brothers bred tan and black hound dogs which they sold to raise money. At the age of 16 he and a friend left laurel to work on a wheat farm in North Dakota until time to register for the selective service. As a young man, his Mother taught him to play the guitar, a hobby he loved throughout his life. James was a talented performer and at one time had a country western band while he served in the US Army in Alaska. He served in the military for 8 years.
