Heaven gained an amazing lady on June 15, 2016. Gwendolyn “Blanche” Haptonstall passed away at Bonell Good Samaritan Society in Greeley, CO, at the age of 102. She was the oldest of nine children of Howard and Evalyn (Bochoven) Ames.
She was born on December 29, 1913 on the family homestead near Rydell, KS, spending her early years enjoying farm family life. After graduation from Concordia, KS, she attended summer school and taught in a country school for two years.
Blanche met James Daniel (Dee) Haptonstall in Manhattan, KS, where they were attending summer school in 1932. They were married in Holyoke, CO on May 11, 1933.
In 1938, they moved to Colorado where they farmed outside of Laird, CO. In 1955 they moved to Wray, CO, but continued farming until their retirement.
Blanche busied herself being a farm wife, was a member of the Laird Community Club, and helped out as a room mother for school parties. She was also a member of the Laird Methodist Church and later the First Christian Church in Wray. She volunteered in the kindergarten class and also at the Senior Center. She loved crocheting and traveling with Dee in the Winnebago to salmon fish in Washington and winter in Harlingen, TX. She had many friends and everyone that met her loved her and her beautiful smile!
Blanche moved to Greeley, CO, in 2008 to be near her family and resided at the Tower at Bonell Good Samaritan Society. She continued to crochet, work puzzles, was an avid reader and loved to send and receive letters and cards. Her friendship list grew by leaps and bounds.
She is survived by one son, James Kay Haptonstall (Nadine), Littleton; two daughters, Janet Rae Welch (Ron), Greeley; and Connie Jo Greenwalt (Chris), Greeley; eight grandchildren, Kevin Haptonstall (Christy); Kirk Haptonstall (Monica); Kimberly Welch; Kreg Welch (Mary Grace); Kurt Welch (Elizabeth); Codi Nelson (Scott); Cara Greenwalt (Steve) and Cami Greenwalt; twelve great grandchildren; Brandon, Kristen, Courtney, Zachary, Adrianna, Jaeden, Elise, Makayla, Addison, Kate, Kade and Matthew; three great great grandchildren; Zayden, Evelyn and Elias; two sisters, Dorothy Hale and Evelyn Miller; two brothers, Dale Ames and Willard Ames; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters, Florence Hammer, Maxine Plambeck and Georgina Rosproy; one brother, Floyd Ames; and one great grandson, Caleb Welch.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 18, 2016, 2:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Wray, Colorado with Rev. Steve Wynkoop. Interment will be held in the Grandview Cemetery in Wray, Colorado.
