Glen "Big Red" Kline was born to Glen N. Kline and Francis K. (Belcher) Kline
February 18, 1936 in Sacramento, California. Glen died May 27, 2017 at the age
of 81.
Glen's father, Glen, worked for The Great Western Sugar company as a pipe-fitter
prompting a family move every few years due to the construction of another
factory. He lived in Wheatland, WY until 1940, moving to Scottsbluff, NE. In 1947
the family moved to Lyman, NE, followed in 1949 by a move to Ovid, CO and
finally returning to Scottsbluff, NE in 1953 where Glen graduated from high school
in 1954.
It was during his family's stay in Ovid that they lived directly across the street
from a local service station and grocery store - Chapman's Market. There
happened to be a young lady to impress across the street and from that chance
meeting Phyllis Chapman would become a wife of 63 + years.
Their marriage started with a little "trickery." It was not possible to finish high
school and be married. Upon Glen's 1954 graduation in Scottsbluff, NE he joined
the Army taking training in Fort Campbell KY. After training he was assigned to
the 62nd Military Police unit and given orders for Germany. Glen and Phyllis with
their parents met in Harrisburg, NE to tie the knot on December 3, 1954. This was
the middle of Phyllis' senior year. After graduation in 1955, Phyllis made
arrangements to travel to Germany to join her husband.
On May 21, 1956, while in Heidelberg, Germany, Richard was born. Glen, Phyllis,
and Rich stayed in Germany until 1957 when Glen's enlistment was completed.
On January 5, 1957, after paying the 21 dollar fee for his wife and son, they all
departed Bremerhaven, Germany for New York by ship. They arrived January
16th to Fort Hamilton, NY with Phyllis suffering from sea sickness the entire trip.
On June 11, 1957 Glen Jr. was born in Scottsbluff, NE - probably explains at least
some of the sea sickness.
Glen and Phyllis soon moved to Ovid, CO to take over Chapman's Market, after
the death of Phyllis' mother. They promptly changed the name to Kline's market.
They ran the market until Glen got a job with a bread delivery company in 1960.
The family moved to Colby KS and then to Wray in 1961.
While in Wray Glen delivered bread from Haigler to Ft. Morgan making many
friends along the way. While delivering bread to a local Wray cafe in 1970 the
conversation turned to the owner wanting out. Big Red's was a local landmark for
many years - Glen and Phyllis retired after more than 25 years in Big Red's.
During their later working years and during their retirement they were active in
following their 7 grandsons in all their athletic events.
