Carolyn Luella Homm passed from this life August 30, 2017, at Kenton Manor in Greeley at the age of 90. She was born at Beecher Island, the second of three children of Howard Manley and Gracie L. (Ekberg) Chase on January 12, 1927.
Carolyn’s early years were spent on the Chase homestead two miles southwest of Beecher. Howard had contracted tuberculosis while serving in World War I. Howard’s health began to fail in 1930, so the family moved to New Mexico in 1933 hoping the drier climate would help, but the family got homesick and returned to Beecher by Christmas. Howard died in March, 1935, and on the night of his death, Carolyn and Bessie Rose, ages 8 and 10, bravely walked 3 miles to Uncle John’s house to get help.
After graduation from Armel High School, she spent a year at Colorado Teacher’s College in Greeley then taught for several years at one-room schools in the area: Armel, Beecher, Vernon, usually living at home and driving to the school with some of her students. She then went to work at First National Bank in Wray until her marriage.
On September 23, 1951, she married Clifford Homm at Beecher. They had two children: George in 1952 and Helen in 1953. Carolyn enjoyed being a housewife, and mother, spending valuable time with her children. She raised chickens, had a garden and enjoyed sewing clothes for her family.
In 1979 she and Clifford leased their land, sold their cattle and spent time traveling, fishing, and continued to maintain a garden. In 1994, they bought cows and ranched with their children. In 1996 they tried living in Burlington, but were back on the ranch in a year.
They attended Sunday School at Beecher and church at St. John United Church of Christ and Hope Congregational Church at Bethune. She was baptized as a young adult, and knew Jesus Christ as her Savior.
Carolyn is survived by son George (Diane), daughter Helen (Terry) Meek, sisters-in-law Doris Chase and Hazel Langendoerfer, step-grandchildren Nathan Mestas, Melanie (Marshall) Thomas, Josiah Medley and Collen Medley, nieces Joyce (Ron) Brown, Sharon (Curt) Boell, Beverly (Larry) Shively, Sandra (Roland) Strobel: nephews Larry (Linda) Dent, Wayne (Antina) Chase and Rod (Renee) Chase.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford, her parents, her sister and brother-in-law Bessie Rose and Paul Dent, her brother Manley Chase, her brothers-in-law Gilbert Homm and Ernie Langendoerfer, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Velma and William Hugh Gerber, and step-grandson Caleb Medley.
