Carol Ann (Schakelaar) Twiss

January 15, 1941 — September 12, 2019

Carol Ann Schakelaar was born to Albert Schakelaar and Bernice (Minton) Schakelaar January 15, 1941 at the Wray Hospital. She was baptized in the First Christian Church of Wray in 1956. Carol graduated from Wray High School in 1958. She married Bob Twiss on April 8, 1959. Bob was in the Air Force and they lived in many cities in the U.S. and even abroad during his 20+ years of service. Bob and Carol began their family in 1960 with the birth of Robert Kent born in Riverside, California. The following year, Launa Deen was born in Topeka, Kansas and Steven Kip the following year also in Topeka.

Bob served in many places over the years. One of Carol’s favorite stories was traveling to the Philippines with 3 children under the age of 5 by herself. The trip was memorable, because she had just one lap for three wide eyed kids, one of whom was sick. When Bob was stationed in Washington, D.C. (Andrews Air Force Base), she enjoyed her love of history and visited all the monuments, museums and famous places always with the whole family along. During all the military reassignments and travel Carol always made sure to be involved in the kids’ school and activities in whatever capacity she was needed, bus driver, refreshment coordinator, room mother, den mother, and crowd control.

When Bob retired from the Air Force in 1978, he and Carol returned with the kids to Wray and moved into the house which they built and still own. They were both glad to be “home” where family and friends welcomed them. Carol loved helping with community events such as The Wray Daze Parade. She belonged to the Wray Historical Society and the Wray Museum Board. She was heavily involved and instrumental in bringing the prairie chicken tours to Wray. She also belonged to the Sorosis Club and enjoyed a good game of pitch with friends and family.

Carol loved collecting various items including but not limited to Carousel Horses, garage sale bargains, stamps, depression wear, antiques, quilts, coins, dolls & windmills. One of her grandchildren was over heard saying, “grandma Carol was the “neatest” hoarder she ever knew.” She enjoyed hosting her family for dinners, grandkid sleepovers, tea parties, sledding adventures and camping in the yard.

Carol’s greatest joy was helping someone or giving something to someone, especially kids, grandkids and great grandkids. She will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her sister, Ferne and brother, Paul.

Carol is survived by her sister, Nadine Renzelman, brother-in-law, Lynn (Sharon) Twiss, and sisters-in-law, Jane (Doyle) Kier and Colleen Twiss and numerous nieces & nephews. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Kent and wife, Becky Twiss, Launa and husband, Stan Holmes, Steve and wife, Janice Twiss all of Wray; Chad, Jamie, Braylon and Brynley Twiss; Shawn, Alissa and Camdyn Twiss; Brittany, Dan and Sophie Timmer; Kellyn, Clay, and Paislee McVey; C.J. and Garrett Travis; Lindsey Holmes: Jamey, Jay, Jace and Jameson Novak; Michael Holmes & fiancée, Kayla Foster; Garret Twiss and Mackenzie Twiss.
