Bernice Elizabeth Zion was born December 8, 1921to Julius Rand Edna V.(Gillett) Lippert at their home 3 1/2 miles southwest of Wray. She was the third of four children: Fred Lippert, Marie Anderson, and Jim Lippert. She lived all of her life in the Vernon/Wray area. She departed this life at Hillcrest Care Center on August 18, 2012 at the age of 90 years and 8 months.
Bernice married Zenos Z. Zion on September 17, 1938. The couple had four children: Jack , Betty, Danny and Becky. In 1945 they moved to their home south of Wray where they resided until moving to Hillcrest.
Bernice attended Radnor School. She rode her horse, Toddy, to school nearly every day and enjoyed telling stories about their adventures to her family. Bernice’s life was focused on her family and friends. She was active in her church women’s groups, was a founding member of the Valley Vesta Extension club, home room mother,assisted with 4-H and Cub Scouts, Campfire girls, various school activities and a member of several card clubs. She loved to travel and camp with Zenos and their grandchildren. The grandchildren have many fond memories of trips to the mountains. In later years Bernice and Zenos traveled with her brother Fred and his wife, Fern.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years Zenos, her son Jack, her parents, her brothers and sister and numerous other relatives and friends.
Bernice is survived by the late Jack Zion’s family including wife, Kathryn and daughters, Christine Mina and son Grant. Shelley Helling and husband Steve, daughter Nicole and husband Cory Frerichs and their sons Jack and Quinn, Sons Jordan and Shane,and daughter Paige. Daughter Betty Danforth,son Craig Danforth and wife Denise,daughters Ashley and Caitlyn. Son Danny Zion,son Rodney Zion and wife Joan,daughters Kaela and Rebekka,daughter Amy Kent and husband Ray,son Justin,daughters Meghan and Victoria. Daughter Becky Lowe and husband Roger, son Rich Lowe,daughter Jacque Hartmann and husband Joe,daughter Maisie and son Christian.Brother-in-law Carl Zion and wife Beverly,sister in-law Katherine Zion,sister-in-law and Jean Lippert, brother in-law, Robert Bryant and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held August 22, 2012 at the Wray United Methodist church with the Reverend Norman Stott officiating. Interment was held at Grandview Cemetery in Wray,CO. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Plains or a charity of your choice.
Spellman-Schmidt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
