Arthur Clark Rolow, better known as Clark, was born on August 18, 1922, the second son of James F. and Docia Roedder Rolow. He was a born in a sod house built by his father and mother. He was Baptized on November 8, 1922, by Reverend Kruezenstein at St. John German Evangelical and Reformed Church.Clark attended the Hale and Armel schools. In World War II, he was inducted into the Army at Ft. Lorgan, Colorado, in November of 1942. He received his Basic Training at Ft. Knox, KY, and his advanced Armored Tank Training at Camp Campbell, KY. He went overseas in March, 1943, landed with U.S. forces in North Africa at Casablanca, then traveled 1,000 miles on a flatbed train car to Oran, and was assigned to the 91st Cavalry Recon Squadron. He went to Sicily by LST and was engaged in active combat until its surrender. He then engaged in two years of combat in Italy. Clark was discharged from the Army at the end of the war in November, 1945.Clark and Mildred Smith were married on December 5, 1945. Clark was appointed Postmaster of the Hale Post Office in 1948. Clark and Mildred owned and operated the Hale store from 1953 – 1983 and continued to live at Hale until 1997, when they bought their home in Wray, Colorado. In 1957, Clark and Mildred adopted two girls, Phyllis and Judy. Clark became a member of St. John United Church of Christ on January13, 1991Clark loved to fish. He was a member of the Jssac Walton League of America and the Bonny Community Club. He enjoyed teaching and helping children catch fish. He truly agreed with the old proverb that says, “God does not subtractfrom the life of a man, the days he spent fishing.” He liked to read–especially Westerns. He is remembered by many as playing music at the Hale dances with his mother and sister. Clark liked everyone he knew — maybe some more than others– and was liked by all who knew him.Clark was preceded in death by his parents James F. and Docia Rolow, and one brother, James Rolow, Junior.He is survived by his wife Mildred, two daughters, Phyllis Long, of Goodland, Kansas; and Judy Taylor, of Longmont, Colorado; 7 grandchildren, 14 Great-grandchildren, and 1 Great- great-grandson. He is also survived by one sister, Patricia Madsen, of St. Francis, Kansas; and one brother, Paul Rolow, of Elgin, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held November 18, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. John United Church of Christ in Idalia, Colorado. Inurnment was in the St. John Cemetery.
