Argil A. Renzelman was born to Conrad Carl Renzelman and Emma Katherine Kugler Renzelman, on February 16, 1936, and passed away December 16, 2014, at the age of 78. He was the youngest of four siblings, including Velma, Lelia , and Walter.
Argil attended country school, Laird elementary and graduated from LairdHigh School in 1954. He loved sports and excelled in football and basketball. Early in 1952, Argil’s basketball team established a ColoradoHigh School scoring record in a 123-45 win over Idalia.
In the fall of 1955, Argil joined the Navy and spent two years sailing the world. During his Navy years, he established some lasting friendships. In 1957, he returned to Wray and started farming the Renzelman farm. In his spare time, he worked for Royal Lynam at the Conoco station.
On June 20, 1959, he married Berna Kay Rockwell, at CalvaryLutheranChurch in Wray, and they started their life together on the farm southeast of Wray. Berna Kay taught school in Idalia and Wray, and Argil supplemented his farm income by carpentering with Gail Brown. Gail was an excellent teacher and every skill Argil learned was put to use on the farm he so dearly loved.
Their first child, Suzanne Renee, was born June 4, 1962, Douglas Craig followed March 9, 1965, and May 3, 1969, Darin Argil Renzelman completed their family.
In 1971, Argil won the Outstanding Young Farmer Award sponsored by the Wray Jacyees. The recognition was for exceptional progress in agriculture and contributions to the community.
In addition to his love of farming, Argil was active in his church by holding many offices and serving as elder for several years. He served 4 years on the Wray-Idalia school board and was a member of the Yuma County Cattleman.
During the early seventies Argil and Berna started irrigating with gated pipe. Irrigation sprinklers and more land were later added to the operation. Their major crops were corn and wheat in addition to their cattle.
Argil was proceeded in death by his parents, sister, Velma Schafer, sister, Lelia, brother, Walter, beloved son, Darin Argil, nephew, Darwin Schafer, cousin, Floyd Renzelman, nephew, Delton Renzelman, niece, Arletta Bridgewater, great-nephew Mike Schafer, and great-niece Pat Cavnaugh.
Left to mourn are his wife of 55 years, Berna Kay, daughter Renee and husband Shawn Miller, and children Brittany Zink, Brandon Zink, Alexandra, Ashlynne, Zack ,and Matt Miller; son Doug and wife Robin and their daughter Mackenzie; brother-in-law, Dwight Rockwell and wife Nancy; nephew, Darrel Schafer and wife Rita; niece, Barbara Schafer; niece, Venetta Jones and husband Milton, nephew, Dennis Renzelman; cousin Nadine Renzelman and many great-nieces and nephews, and many great-great nieces and nephews.
A Receiving of Family & Friends was held at the Spellman-Schmidt Funeral Home in Wray, Colorado, Thursday, December 18, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
A Funeral Services was held at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Wray, Colorado on Friday, December 19, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Timothy Davis officiating. Interment was held at in the Grandview Cemetery in Wray, Colorado.
