Anna (Deterts) Engel

Anna (Deterts) Engel was born on October 20, 1920 to Ed and “Geeske” Grace (Stekker) Deterts, at the family home west of Vernon, Colorado. Anna was one of seven children and attended early schooling at the Vernon Lutheran School.

She married John Henry Engel on January 17, 1946 in St. Francis, KS. They lived on a farm in Vernon, Colorado until the mid-1960’s when they then moved to Wray, Colorado.

Anna was employed by the City of Wray for many years and was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary and a member for 53 years. She volunteered to help with several funeral dinners, poppy sales and putting the Auxiliary flags out at the Grandview Cemetery in Wray on fellow members of Auxiliary on Memorial Day. She was the Community Service representative for the American Legion Auxiliary where she made sure that anyone who was under the weather or Auxiliary family member had passed away received a card, flowers or a fruit basket.

In more recent years, she was active in the 55 and Over Club of Wray.

Anna’s favorite things were playing cards, quilting, making pies and spending time with family and friends. Both John and Anna loved to go dancing and attending Saturday night pool games at the Vet’s Club.

Anna passed away on Thursday August 9, 2018 at the Hillcrest Care Center in Wray, Co. She is preceded in death by her husband, John, both parents, and her four brothers.

Anna is loved and survived by her sisters, Louise Brower of Yuma, Helen Brown of Wray, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Monday, August 13, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home in Wray, Colorado. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, 2:00 p.m. at the Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home, Wray, Colorado with Pastor Glen Kline officiating. Interment in the Grandview Cemetery in Wray, Colorado. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, c/o Roberta Helling, 852 East 1 ^st Street, Wray, Colorado 80758 or the 55 & Over Club, 741 W. 7 ^th Street, Wray, Colorado 80758.
